April 1951 Atlantis AFC formed
Colours: Yellow with black trim.
The majority of the club founders met on the ship 'Atlantis' that arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand in January 1950. Sharing an interest in both football and
socialising, a decision was made to enter a team in the Canterbury Football Association League.
This strip was chosen to match the colours of the ship - Atlantis - Shaw Saville Line. It was not
lost on the club's founders that these were also the colours of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It is believed the main club founders were: Jack Hartley, Pat Toner, Vic Thomas, Sam McMinn, Colin Campbell, Billy
Shannon, Arthur Verlander (first Atlantis President) and Jim A'Dorian (first Atlantis Secretary).
John Tennant was a prodigious seller of raffle tickets, contributing around £1,000 a year,
the other main fundraiser was an illegal card night, held weekly in the Wentworth Buildings!
1956 Hungaria AFC folded and their players joined Atlantis AFC en-mass. They added flair, skill and player
numbers, however their arrival also created division within the club.
1958 saw Atlantis AFC beat the crew of the Royal Yacht Brittania in a "friendly" at Beckenham Park.
April 1961 Atlantis AFC changed its name to Christchurch Wanderers AFC
Colours: Yellow with black trim was maintained
Amongst others, Alan Fraser MBE was the driving force behind the change of name in 1961. His rationale was that the links to the ship 'Atlantis' were distant
and the club needed a name that better reflected its location.
It is also at this time that Christchruch Wanderers AFC entered its first two Junior teams in the CJFA competition.
April 1967 Christchurch Wanderers AFC changed its name to Cashmere Wanderers AFC
Colours: Yellow with maroon trim
Both the name change and change of trim colour were made at this time to better reflect the club's links with Cashmere High School, a near neighbor and an
active feeder of players into the club. |
