May 2002 Cashmere Wanderers Junior Section Newsletter

 From the President..

Five weekends of games have already been played, so the season is now well under way! Thanks to the committee, grade organisers, coaches, managers and others for all the work they have put in to get a smooth start to the season. Unfortunately, with the significant increase in club members, and delays in production of new strip, some teams were without strip for several games. All teams are fully equipped now, and the committee is looking at ways to improve gear supply next year - the strip is what immediately distinguishes you as a Cashmere Wanderer’s Club member.
There is a team busily working on a much improved web site for the Cashmere Wanderer’s club, to include club draws, results, news and player profiles. It is being designed to allow input from club members, and you will be informed when it is available for general use.
This year, a different competition grade team meets each Saturday afternoon at the Cashmere Club with the senior teams, for presentation of Player of the Day, and some socialising. It is proving popular for all involved, and is helping to forge stronger links between the senior and junior sections of the club.
I hope you all have a rewarding season with good improving results, while developing your skills and enjoying the great game of soccer..

 Playing Strip

Due to the unforseen growth of the number of children playing for the Junior Club this year (an increase of 9 teams), we found ourselves with a shortage of playing jerseys again this year. With the club colours being what they are we are unable to purchase jerseys straight from the shelf. This raises two issues; firstly we have to have the jerseys manufactured, and at this time of year most manufacturers have their order books full with deadlines stretching 6-8 weeks; secondly there always seems to be a shortage of gold material . Hence, unfortunately, we had teams start the season without playing strip for three games. .I would like to take this opportunity of saying thankyou to the majority of coaches, players and parents in these teams who have been patient and understanding of the situation. I would also like to thank Anderson and Hill for their kind donation of getting the jerseys screen printed with the pattern on the front which makes the jerseys one of the greater looking ones on the parks around town…...Martin

 From the Social Scene…..

We are working through all junior competition grades to each visit the clubrooms (at the Cashmere Club, Colombo Street) 5-6 p.m. each Saturday along with parents, grandparents etc. for the presentation of results, and player of the day award. We would like to encourage and generate more interaction and involvement between the Senior and Junior Club. The Senior Men’s First Team would also like to be able to watch the nominated teams’ game on the same day where possible and to provide support, interest and encouragement. Some teams have already had their turn and we have had positive feedback from both sides. There is a pleasant space outside for the younger ones to goof about before presentations.

We hope this event will lead to more senior players taking on a coaching role while establishing role models for the junior club members.

Already the Junior Club has been supported by the Seniors in the coaching field, providing us with two excellent coaches this year. These two people do not have children in the club but are willingly giving us their time and expertise .Many, many thanks to Andrew Thomson , a masters player who is coaching the 10th grade Keas, and Nicki Goodman, coach of the Junior Youth Maroon team.

We hope many members and parents will avail themselves of this opportunity on their teams selected day. Please feel free to go back any Saturday night.

 End of Season Reminder

At the end of this season we will again be requesting names for Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player trophies from ALL TEAMS.

Coaches will be contacted by grade organisers later in the year. Work hard at your skills and game play now and you may be selected for one of these categories.

 Senior Men’s First Team

Some of the players in our junior club have fathers playing in the Cashmere Wanderers Men’s First Team. These guys are in the Canterbury League, Division One. There are five dads in the team with children ranging in age from 1-9 years. The Team’s youngest player is 17 years of age . Their oldest player remains unnamed!

Currently this team is UNBEATEN. An exciting game will take place this Saturday when they play their toughest opposition, Rangiora. Previously, in the pre-season Kaiapoi tournament, this team played Rangiora scoring a winning result. Cashmere also beat a Federation 6 team (Brighton) in the final.

This is exciting stuff because winning this division would mean a playoff with the winner of the Nelson League for an opportunity to playoff with the bottom of the Federation 6 League for a much sort after position in that league.

To all those interested, motivated spectators who missed the Rangiora match there is still a golden opportunity to show your support by attending a match

We urge you all to attend ” en-masse” the next game.
